Furniture Maker to Coach: My Journey to Becoming a Personal Trainer

Furniture Maker to Coach: My Journey to Becoming a Personal Trainer

Hey there!

If you are new here Welcome! If you have been here a while Yay and thank you for your support! With the growth of my business these last few months I wanted to take the time to re-introduce myself to you all!

I'm Cat Keene, and today I'm excited to take you on a journey through the twists and turns of my life that led me to become a personal trainer. So grab a cup of coffee or tea, and let's dive into the story of how a furniture maker found her passion for fitness.

Picture this: A 18 year old me, back from doing my 7th form year in the USA and I was offered an apprentice in Furniture Making – I was the top in my class for Wood Work at school.  I accepted and I soon found myself as the lone lady surrounded by a crew of 20-something men. Now, I may not have been the strongest, but I was certainly the most determined to prove that I could hold my own so I found myself joining Les Mills in Dunedin, getting a personal trainer and starting my wellbeing journey.

Over the course of the next couple of years I dropped two dress sizes, got strong and amazingly fit, but beneath the surface, I was grappling with self-image issues, my relationship with food was terrible, and now looking back I was overdoing it at the gym.

At the tender age of 21 when I was struggling to get to the top of my BMI range even though I was a size 12, exercising every day and eating a very low-calorie diet, a light bulb went off. I was sick of fighting my body and genetics and it was time for a career change.  I wanted to go back to school, become a personal trainer. Why? Because I wanted to help everyday people embrace their fitness journey, no matter their shape, fitness level, or age.

Fast forward to today, and I proudly wear the title of a Personal Trainer, Wellbeing and Women’s health coach. My passion lies in supporting women through the rollercoaster ride of perimenopause, motherhood, and the pursuit of a balanced relationship with food, exercise, and, most importantly, themselves.

I love working with all my clients

Over the years I have made it a mission to enhance my knowledge every single year since I graduated – that's nearly 17 years of constant learning! This year, I'm gearing up for a conference in November, and next year, well we will have to see but I can’t wait to share it with you once I learn it!

And what's a blog post without a touch of personal flair? I listen to country music when I workout, I’m a certified Disney freak, and nothing beats homemade cookie dough or a good steak with mashed potatoes in my book. Because, yes, even personal trainers indulge in comfort food.

I have been to Disney Land LA, Disney World Orlando and Disney Land Paris.  I love it!

So there you have it, a glimpse into the life of Cat Keene, the furniture maker turned fitness guru.
